Central Hockey League Co-Founder Ray Miron Passed Away

Ray Miron, former Tulsa Oilers general manager, coach and Central Hockey League co-founder passed away on Friday in Tulsa. He was of 92 age.

On Friday, his son Monte Miron said, “He lived a good life. He did a lot for hockey and for pro sports in Tulsa and Oklahoma.” Ray Miron is survived by his son, Monte, and wife Judy, daughter Cindy, grandchildren Danielle, Dane, Michelle, Corbin and wife Marianne, and two great-grandchildren, Delaney and Dylan.

Born in Cornwall, Ontario on March 20, 1923, Rodolph “Ray” Miron rose as a player through Canada’s amateur ranks. A mustard gas accident in June 1944 at the plant he worked in, left him severely burnt and ended his sports career.

But, Miron continued to work in sport. He moved into arena management and promoting concerts for artists such as Tommy Dorsey and Louis Armstrong. After working in New Jersey and Tennessee, Miron moved to Oklahoma.

Pro hockey had returned to Tulsa in 1964 and the Oilers had collaborated with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Miron had been appointed as president of CHL in 1976, but he resigned in three months. He became the first general manager of the NHL’s Colorado Rockies. He was general manager for five years, before he came to Tulsa. Along with Oilers’ GM in the original Central Hockey League, Miron was also their coach during his last season with the team.
